2008 SAE's

Any truth re the gossip about the mint not producing any more 2008 SAE's?

I hope so.

I think they have suspended sales of business circulated standard issue bullion for an unknown period of time. The Canadian Mint has supposedly done the same with the silver Maples.

This turning into a fun week for us dreamers.

I just got back from my coin shop and can't tell if they were blowing smoke, or just didn't want to get burned on the dip.

premium + $3 for 2008's

Combonation of both.....I would still pick up it just to be on the safe side...... those coins are gonna fecth a massive premium if they dont ramp up production...... it could be a situation of 1996 SAE's

That's what my dealer said . . . and I thus took the bait, I was just looking for some support.

You're among the fortunate few who can even find any right now, locally.

By the end of the week they will be all gone bye bye.

Re: 2008 SAE's

Its true.........as I have posted on other threads - and has been reported by numerous PM writers - the Mint has suspended their 2008 SAE. They are sold out.

Now - whats NOT been reported is that they had to send 500,000 silver rounds - from which they stamp the coins - back to Sunshine Minting (?) because they were mis-made.........not quite sure what was wrong with them but anyway.

So they now have to smelt and re-make the rounds - then they go back to the Mint for turning into coins. The estimate I have heard is roughly 6-8 weeks.

Now - while 500,000 sounds like a lot of eagles - its really not (whats the normal mintage of eagles - 3.5 million??) and if demand continues at this rate, or increases due to the worldwide shortage (in the US, Canada and Australia at least - no real idea whats going on in Asia and Europe, but I have heard reports from a few individuals that is tight there too).........those should be gone in a blink of an eye.......

There is - apparently - a disconnect between the paper price of silver (the spot price) and the actual selling price as demand increases but supply is nil..........

One would like to think the physical sale price of silver will dominate the markets - not paper..........

The other nagging little question is - how much more paper silver (or silver stocks) have been sold than there is physical to cover - and what happens when that comes to light??

Sivler rockets (which I am against in general) MAY actually need to be posted!!!

You didnt take any" bait"..........you acted with common sense..... in about 2 years that same dealer is gonna be the but end of many jokes..... when other people find out that he sold 08 SAE's for ONLY 3 dollars above spot.

The only person that took the "bait" was him.......

If sunhine mint had to do it all over again THEY WOULD HAVE KEPT THE DAM ROUNDS ........DEFECTS AND ALL!!!

Any dealer that is able to sell now is catching a sweet premium because of this shortage.... if they ever have a second problem with the mint I guarantee they are NOT going to complain.

You both raise and interesting point - however, Sunshine must have a contract with the US Mint and I doubt, even for some profit, they would break it and risk a lawsuit over what, for them, is pocket change.

That is fair point....... but I am quite sure that sunshine is "taking notes" about the unpredcedented demand for silver.... when the next "dry spell" if it goes on for any lenght of time.... they just might break from procedure and go with the flow.....

I fully belive in contract enforcement ....... but going forward it will be the quick the limber and the flexible who will make more money beyond there wildest dreams.

Re: 2008 SAE's

Historical US Mint sales in the 1st Quarter:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/3...ersalesco7.jpg

Couple items to note:

1. Record sales in 1Q 2008
2. w/ higher prices, record revenues in 1Q '08
(should pay for a lot of pennies and nickels)

2007 & 2008 prices are based on eyeballing it.

The 2008's wont be significantly rarer than any others. They've already sold 4.2 million.:Sorry:

Thanks for the post, Hernan!

I was looking for this info and couldn't find it anywhere but figured if there's a shortage with this latest dip with already stiff consumer buying this year there had to be a good number out there already.

hernancortes 03-26-2008 03:23 PM

Re: 2008 SAE's

Yes actually I think the 08 will turn out to be among the least rare of all years; the mint will resume production in due course and pent up demand will catch up. As it is the sales have already exceeded that of the '96's and 97's and some others as well.

I fully expect that to occur..... but 08 willhave the distiction of being the most fastest accumulated SAE....... EVER

and THERE WILL BE ANOTHER DRY SPELL I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE..... what is pushing demand eagles? the POG is too high.....and breakdown in the markets got people freaking out. the hands that are buying silver are hands that are desperate for security.

And 08's will be quite rare .......when the giant silver meltdown of 09 starts a sealed mint box will fetch a LEGENDARY PREMIUM.

Just give it time......24-36 months Tops

'08 SAE's - maybe least rare but so far least in circulation?

The Sunshine Mint SNAFU explains the US Mint shortage today.

I just wonder about what the excuse is tomorrow while the we might find out that PHYSICAL is not the same as PAPER held in 800,000,000 ounces SHORT on the CRIMEX, right?

My guess is that we'll see a doubling of the price like GOLD UNDER FDR in 1933 six months after he took American's money away from them in the worst money depression in America's history.

Wait until a few more words of plausible DENYING come from the government who did a really stupid thing of selling inherent valuable things like gold and silver to suppress their prices. ONLY YOUR GOVERNMENT can do that and try to buy them back with printed green trees, right.

Imagine selling off 4,000 MILLIONS of silver ounces to suppress the price - now that's totally NUTTY - but it happened, right?

Even worse according the GATA they sold off more than HALF the US GOLD held in their TRUST (yeah TRUST!) to make the phoney Paper dollar strong - the greater good and bankrupting America and all that!
